spacers

Separators or Spacers

Separators or spacers are small doughnut shaped rubber bands placed between the teeth. They allow us to gradually create enough space so that bands and crowns can be placed more comfortably and accurately.

Separators can cause teeth to be slightly sensitive or quite sore. Teens or young children who experience discomfort from the spacer should take Tylenol or Advil at the first sign of pain and take it as needed. Adults can take Tylenol, but may find Advil or Aspirin is more effective.

Once the separators have created space, they may become loose or fall out. Do not be alarmed if you swallow a spacer. We also ask that you DO NOT floss the area in which separators are placed.

What to do if a separator comes out?

If a separator comes out, take a piece of floss and place it between the teeth where the spacer is missing.

If it is easy to place the floss between the teeth, it means the space is staying open. If the floss is difficult to place, it means the space has closed and the spacer will have to be replaced.
