Lingual Braces

What are Lingual Braces?

Lingual BracesLingual braces work like traditional braces but are invisible. The brackets are placed on the back side of the teeth, so no one will know you are wearing them. Lingual braces straighten teeth within the same amount of time metal braces do and according to each patient’s individual need. Lingual braces are great for teens and adult professionals who would benefit from more confidence as a result of the invisibility of lingual braces while maintaining great dental health.

How do Lingual Braces Work?

An impression will be made of the teeth. Then, a laboratory will use computer technology to design a custom fit for the back of the teeth. Brackets are transferred to the teeth and cemented. Regular appointments with Dr. Garrett will be scheduled to monitor progress.

What are Other Specific Advantages of Lingual Care?

  • Lingual braces may be used in combination with other braces, such as using lingual braces on the upper teeth and possibly ceramic braces on the lower teeth.
  • They are a good option for those with a sensitivity to plastic.
  • They may avoid the possible self-conciousness that metal braces may provoke in certain patients.
  • There is a greater comfort level with lingual braces for some patients because they are custom-fit.
  • They are convenient for persons playing contact sports or those who play a wind instrument.

What are the Disadvantages of Lingual Care?

  • They require an adjustment period which may last 1-4 weeks.

In the first few days, the choice of softer foods may ease the possible discomfort.

  • The tongue is usually temporarily affected (there are ways to make this more comfortable by using wax)
  • Also, initially your speech may be affected.
