What to do in an Emergency
Dr. Garrett treats an orthodontic emergency in Winchester va

While true orthodontic emergencies are very rare, when they do occur, we are available to offer care and confidence.

Please call the office if you are ever experiencing severe pain or  you have a painful appliance problem that you can’t take care of yourself. Our staff will be able to schedule an appointment to resolve the problem as soon as possible!

You might be surprised to learn that you may be able to temporarily solve many problems yourself until you schedule an appointment with our office. After alleviating discomfort, it is very important that you call our office as soon as possible to schedule a time to repair the problem. Allowing your appliance to remain damaged for an extended period of time may result in disruption to your treatment plan.

What Constitutes an Emergency?

There are several reasons you should call your orthodontist right away. These include:

If you experience a trauma or injury to the teeth, face or mouth either from an accident or a sports related incident, it is imperative that you seek medical attention. In these situations, time is of the essence and you will often have a better chance of recovering fully if you see a doctor.

Infection or swelling of the gums, mouth or face is often a sign of an abscess. Your regular dentist is the place to turn if you think you have an infection. They are trained to handle a wide range of dental issues.

If you are suffering severe, unmanageable pain or discomfort in your mouth or face, this is a reason to seek medical attention.

Loose brackets or bands are minor but common issues that can occur when you get braces. If a band or bracket should pop off, apply orthodontic wax to the area and schedule an appointment to see us as soon as possible.

A poking wire can occur near the back of the mouth as teeth begin to move and can cause irritation to the cheeks. If this occurs, apply wax to the area and schedule an appointment to take care of the problem.

Occasionally, an elastic tie that is applied over the bracket can snap or be lost. This is usually not an issue and can be taken care of at your next orthodontic visit.
